Pre-parade Traffic Control and Check-in Responsibilities (3:30-5:45 PM):
  • Arrive on Time (4:30 PM):
    • Report to the designated check-in location promptly at 4:30 PM for briefing, assignment of responsibilities and a safety vest.
  • Check-in Process:
    • Assist in checking in vehicles and participants for the parade.
    • Verify participant registration or credentials as required.
    • Provide them with the driver instructions and line up spot #
  • Directing Traffic:
    • Safely manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow around parade staging areas.
    • Communicate with drivers courteously, providing clear instructions regarding detours or blocked roads.
    • Assist walking participants with crossing the road
  • Communication with Parade Officials:
    • Stay in communication with parade officials regarding traffic updates or potential issues.
  • Safety Monitoring:
    • Monitor the area for any safety hazards or emergencies (e.g., stalled vehicles, pedestrians on the road) and deal with  them promptly.
    • Ensure all walking participants remain on the sidewalk alongside the floats or are seated in their floats during staging 
    • Assist with group control in the ‘walking participants’ area near the playground
  • Parade start (5:45 PM):
    • Ensure participants are lined up in the correct order according to the parade plan.
    • Cueing walking groups of their entry into the line up
    • If chosen,  transition into your parade roles
  • Parade Escort Marshal Duties (5:00–8:00 PM):
  • Arrive on Time (5:00 PM):
    • Report promptly to the designated staging area at 5:00 PM for briefing and to receive your assigned position and equipment (e.g., radio, safety vest).
  • Escort Positioning:
    • Take your assigned position within or alongside the parade procession, ensuring that you maintain visibility and stay in communication with other marshals and parade organizers.
  • Monitoring Parade Movement:
    • Walk alongside the parade participants to ensure the procession moves at a safe and consistent pace.
    • Keep a safe distance between floats, vehicles, and marchers to avoid congestion or accidents.
    • Ensure that parade participants remain with their designated floats if engaging with the crowds
  • Crowd Control:
    • Monitor spectators to ensure they remain off the roadway 
    • Gently guide any spectators who encroach on the parade route back to a safe distance.
    • Communicate with other marshals or police if crowd control issues arise.
  • Participant Safety:
    • Ensure the safety of parade participants, making sure everyone follows safety guidelines.
    • Watch for any emergencies, injuries, or hazards, and respond as necessary by notifying event staff or emergency services.
  • Coordination with Authorities:
    • Stay in communication with event staff, and other marshals via radio or phone to ensure smooth coordination.
    • Relay any updates or issues (e.g., delays) to the parade participants.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Be prepared to act in case of emergencies (e.g., accidents, medical issues) by following event protocols and contacting appropriate authorities.
  • End of Parade (8:00 PM):
    • Escort participants to the designated dispersal area at the end of the parade route, ensuring an orderly and safe conclusion.
    • Assist in directing floats, vehicles, and marchers to safely exit the parade area.
    • Return any equipment and check out with event organizers once the parade has concluded.
  • End-Parade Traffic Control Duties (5:00PM-8:00PM):

    1. Arrival at Post:
      • Arrive at Bedford Place Mall  to check in and receive assigned post 
      • Receive the necessary equipment (e.g., reflective vest, traffic control signs, radio) 
    2. Traffic Management:
      • Manage traffic flow around dispersal areas, redirecting vehicles as necessary and ensuring no unauthorized vehicles enter restricted areas.
      • Escort floats/participants to the designated dispersal area at the end of the parade route, ensuring an orderly and safe conclusion.
      • Ensure the flow of traffic, assist in directing floats, vehicles, and marchers to safely exit the parade area.
      • Be prepared to handle increased traffic volume as spectators and participants exit the event area.
    3. Crowd Dispersal:
      • Monitor the safe offloading of float participants.
      • Prevent any individuals from driving against parade traffic in the parking lot.
      • Assist in clearing the route by ensuring floats, vehicles, and participants exit safely and follow the designated dispersal plans.
    4. Safety Monitoring:
      • Keep an eye out for any safety hazards (e.g., pedestrians crossing into traffic, vehicles moving too quickly) and intervene or notify authorities as needed.
      • Ensure that all volunteers and participants leave the area safely without interfering with traffic.
    5. Wrap-Up:
      • Once traffic has returned to normal, ensure all equipment is collected and report back to your supervisor or event coordinator.
